Archies Hut | Mount Aurum Recreation Reserve

Built by Archie McNichol in about 1946, who ran Mount Orem sheep station from 1940–71. He wanted accommodation to prospect from, but ended up using it as a mustering hut.

It’s built mostly from beech saplings as structure, with the old water race steel flumes beaten flat as roofing and wall cladding. Even is lined internally with that rusty steel.

Bunks are short, and basically, you sleep on plywood without mattresses. Nice floorboards.

Note that the hut has no windows, and the wood burner has been removed because there is no firewood nearby.

On the other hand, it is one of the best hut settings with glorious views of Mount Aurum.
