Carneys Bivvies | Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park

The two bivvies were helicoptered in at different times. One is fitted out with two mattresses in bunks, a stainless-steel-topped bench, but no fire. This one has the hut book. The other is more of a low shed with a sleeping platform at the midpoint and little else. Not even a mattress.

Visited by occasional thar hunters and a sprinkling of hut baggers who like the idea of the two-for-one deal.

The route up Carneys Creek is straightforward when the flow is low, with no climbs around bluffs involved. Plenty of gravel has filled the lower valley, which makes the for fast travel, but the rocks are more prominent and lumpy as the river gets closer to the two bivvies.

The mountainous backdrop is impressive.
