Youngman Stream Hut | Puketeraki Forest Conservation Area
Youngman Stream Hut is another of the many SF 70 six-bunk huts that were built from 1958 to 1978. This is one of the last, and like many, has the open fireplace replaced with a woodburner to reduce ventilation and firewood use.
It’s located on a river terrace clearing, so it receives reasonable sunlight, with the nearby river giving a pleasant ambience. It’s been renovated with a wood burner, stainless steel benchtops, timber bunks, and has recently been painted.
The river route from the road takes about four or so hours and is easy enough when the river is low; it just involves many river crossings. Okay, there is one or two rock obstacles to get over/around that some would find preferable to sidling for three hours, including a 200 m climb and descent.
Whichever way, it’s enough to make you feel like you’ve put in a good day’s effort. It’s a great destination for adventurous teenagers.
