Bobs Camp Bivvy | Mount Thomas Forest Conservation Area

This is an extruded, horseshoe-shaped hut style designed for relocation by helicopter. And this is the case here. It was built in 1983, but relocated to its current spot in 1992. Other similar structures in the Canterbury and Marlborough hills include Lower Salmon Creek Bivouac, Kohutara Bivvy, Fidget Bivvy, and Palmer Bivvy, among others.

It’s a tidy two-bunk bivvy, with a long bench, that nestles into the beech forest. A large fireplace has been built close by, which is surprising considering the fire danger.

Water is the main issue in summer as the nearby rivulet can dry up, requiring a cross-country to find the next water course, which is more reliable.
