Thompsons Flat Hut | Private land
A standard six-bunk SF 70 New Zealand Forest Service hut, now located on private land. A Canterbury four-wheel-drive club has taken over maintenance, and it has done some work on the hut. Still plenty to do.
The walk from Lake Daniel is mighty fine, with no climbing involved. The last 150 m, once you emerge from the forest into a grassed open area and can see the hut, is a swamp that cows’ hooves have well puckered over the decades.
