Acton Hut | Eyre Mountain/ Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park

A good hut to camp outside.

Yeah, it’s derelict. It’s maintained by the local community, but they seem to have given up on it at least ten years ago, possibly because the four-wheel-drive road through the exotic forest has a locked gate, 10 km from the hut.

It’s hardly exaggerating to say every horizontal surface is covered in rat, and every vertical one in dusty cobwebs. It could be cleaned up, I guess, but it would take a lot of work, and it’s not clear who would use it.
