Mt Bee Bunkrooms | Eyre Mountain/ Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park
This is a compact collection of four structures. There’s a living room that has a sink with the tap over, a wood burner, and a table and chairs. Two small bunk rooms have two sleeping platforms each with two mattresses, is, sleeping for eight, although the platforms are wide enough for another mattress and you could fit 12 in comfortably enough. These are joined by a porch that is open at one end. There’s an unlocked shed with a concrete floor, and the standard fibreglass long drop not so far away.
The complex is assisted by a four-wheel-drive track with a lock gate at the road end. You need permission to walk the 1.5 km up the track to the Conservation Park boundary from the landholder. He was, let’s say, gruff when spoken to, but he had rung me back fairly quickly. He did want to know where I was going for some reason. Note that the track has an electric fence on each side. It is possible to get a key to unlock the gate, or he will unlock it for you if you arrange it, which hunters seem to appreciate. I heard a 40-ounce bottle of whiskey helps. The four-wheel-drive track continues along the ridge top towards Irthing Hut for about 2/3 of the way.
