Wairaurahiri Hut | near Fiordland National Park

Perched close to the substantial Wairaurahiri River that flows out of Lake Hauroko. Interestingly, the east side of the river was logged, the west side not, and it is a major contrast in vegetation. The track from Port Craig Schoolhouse Hut runs along an old railway line and is easy walking for much of the way, with four major historic viaducts to check out.

Worth the walk on the good track down to the river mouth. Some may prefer to stay at the more luxurious Waitutu Lodge on the river’s other side, where people jet-boating down from Lake Hauroko stay for a night or two.

North-facing and pretty well appointed overall.
