Turnbulls Hut | Longwood Forest Conservation Area

Turnbulls Hut was built around 1906 as accommodation for workers maintaining a nearby water race to provide sluicing water to the goldfields. Retains some of the 120-year-old ambience, the dirt floor and a generous open fire.

It has not been well maintained, but it has now become part of Te Araroa, although few choose to stay. The area outside is swampy, and the damp dirt floor suggests camping down at Turnbull Dam, two minutes’ walk to the north, is a preferable accommodation option.
