Mikonui Flat Hut, Stewardship Land

Mikonui Flat Hut is a standard six-bunk SF 70 ex-New Zealand Forest Service hut in reasonable condition, used by hunters who can cope with the hour-long walk to the hut.

Water requires a trek to the Tuke River with one of the large plastic containers at the hut. It has a wood burner, but firewood requires foraging.

The 18 km gravel access road crosses a few creeks and is prone to washouts, so low-to-the-ground two-wheel drives may find progress to the car park challenging. The route to the hut from the carpark is flat and straightforward, although you will get your feet wet. You cross a few tiny creeks before getting to the old locked homestead, but then you also cross the Mikonui River. The river is flat and wide, so it can be crossed without concern during normal flow.

Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, red for youth) for each night of your stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. A Backcountry Hut Pass is also valid year-round.
