Mikonui Flat Hut, Stewardship Land
Mikonui Flat Hut is a standard six-bunk SF 70 ex-New Zealand Forest Service hut in reasonable condition that is used by hunters who can cope with the hour’s walk to the hut.
Water requires a trek to the Tuke River with one of the large plastic containers at the hut. It has a wood burner, but firewood requires foraging.
The 18 km gravel access road crosses a few creeks and is prone to washouts, so low-to-the-ground two-wheel drives may find progress to the car park challenging. The route to the hut from the carpark is flat and straightforward, although you will get your feet wet. You cross a few tiny creeks before getting to the old locked homestead, but then also cross the Mikonui River. The river is flat and wide so that it can be crossed without concern during the usual flow.
