Isolation Hut | Isolated Hill Scenic Reserve
The hut is a modified SF 70 type, usually a six-bunker, but has been extended to accommodate eight mattresses. Half of the visitors don’t stay, as they’re on a day trip, but the hut itself is in great condition, located in a sunny spot with a view down to the start of the gorge.
The huts in this area were closed immediately after the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake due to the risk of rockfalls in Sawcut Gorge. They have subsequently been opened, but the DOC website is vague about the route in.
The most direct legal route to Isolation Hut is to wander up the Weimer River from a car park just after the turn-off to the farm across the river. Look out for the DOC sign at the side of the road. This route uses Unformed Legal Roads’ legal access.
It still requires scrambling through some gnarly areas in the Weimer River, a steep scree slope with a substantial drop to the river beneath, and some awkward rocks, but once in Sawcut Gorge, it’s pretty straightforward.
And yes, you do walk through an open-top tunnel that you can touch on either side.
Just don’t look up.
