Goose Flat Hut | Ka Whata Tu o Rakihouia Conservation Park

Sadly a splendid new Goose Flat Hut, built in 2006, burned down in a January 2020 wildfire, and somehow this pre-1927 building that was immediately adjacent survived. The old willow tree that overhung the old hut was also a casualty.

It needed a few basic repairs to the structure and repainting, which were affected in 2022.

Plenty of history here, as one of the few surviving old musterer’s huts that were once scattered along the river.

Not really inhabitable: no bunks, one small window, dusty dirt floor.

Many choose to camp under a spreading willow tree close to the river.
