Bottom Gordon Hut, Leatham River

This ex-New Zealand Forest Service hut was extended and upgraded in 1993, although the windows are only single-glazed.

It’s in surprisingly good condition, considering that a four-wheel drive can be driven to the front door. Then again, it is a big 38 km to State Highway SH 63 in the Wairau Valley.

Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, red for youth) for each night of your stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. A Backcountry Hut Pass is also valid year-round.
