Saxton Hut, Saxton River
Saxton Hut is a recent addition that can be used both on the East West route and the Leatham/Molesworth route. Actually, a fine hut, with a good view.
This is a hut with a history, nevertheless. It was originally built in 1968 at Quartz Creek in Mount Richmond Forest Park, then in 1986 it was relocated to Boulder Stream near the original location. Then, in 2012, it was rebuilt and relocated to its current position.
Apparently, outside the summer drought, the Saxton River crossing may make access difficult. DOC is considering installing a bridge over the Saxton River here.
