Saxton Hut, Saxton River
Saxton Hut is a recent addition that can be used both on the East West route, and the Leatham/Molesworth route. Actually a fine hut, with a good view.
This is a hut with a history nevertheless. It was originally built in 1968 at Quartz Creek in Mount Richmond Forest Park, then in 1986 it was relocated to Boulder Stream near the original location. Then in 2012 it was rebuilt and relocated to its current position.
Apparently outside the summer drought the Saxton River crossing may make access difficult. DOC is considering the installation of a bridge over the Saxton River here.
