Devils Hut | Wakamarina Track, Mt Richmond Forest Park
The name Devils Hut must have some story about its origin, but I’m not aware of it.
This hut was built to replace an old gold miner’s slab hut out the back.
Devils Hut is a typical NZFS SF 70 six-bunker that has been altered over the years: the open fire has been replaced with a woodburner, the internal cupboard removed, benches replaced, the squeaky steel bunks modified, etc. It’s an easy tramp up from Butchers Flat carpark through an area with an extensive gold mining history.

Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, red for youth) for each night of your stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. A Backcountry Hut Pass is also valid year-round.
