McConchies Hut | Kahurangi National Park
McConchies Hut is an old NZFS four-bunker in the Matiri Valley, which doesn’t see much traffic these days. That is unfortunate because it is a comfortable enough hut and handily positioned on a flattish walk, halfway between the Matiri roadend and the more remote Hurricane Hut.
There would be plenty to do for hunters in this area if the number of deer tracks in the riverbed were a real indication of the animal population in the easy walking vicinity.
The track was re-cut in October 2015, so it’s not a major battle getting up the valley, at least until the vegetation grows back.

Before you go, buy 1 Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, red for youth) for each night of your stay. Put this in the honesty box at the hut. A Backcountry Hut Pass is also valid year-round.
