Hurricane Hut | Kahurangi National Park
Not many people visit Hurricane Hut these days, and half of those that do are hunters who are choppered in.
And that’s a pity because it’s an extraordinarily smashed-up landscape after the 1929 Murchison earthquake, the limestone and mudstone don’t stick to the hillside the same way that granite does. There are boulders as big as houses scattered about having rolled down the slopes. And plenty more still just hanging on up the hills.
Hurricane is a great four-bunk hut, welcoming accommodation after traversing the Matiri Range from the Wangapeka Saddle.
