Big Hellfire or Hellfire Pass Hut | Rakiura National Park, Stewart Island

Big Hellfire Hut is almost at the top of the hill. Note it’s big days either side of this hut, Mason Bay or East Ruggedy.

The sign says Big Hellfire, DOC says Hellfire Pass Hut, take your pick.

Nestled into the bush with big rata trees close at hand there are some spectacular views to be had of both Benson Peak and the swamps down in the valley at Ruggedy Flat, or, if you climb a short distance through the sand dunes, down to Big Hellfire Beach and the big ocean swells coming in past Codfish Island/Whenua Hou.
