Steele Creek Hut | off the Greenstone Track, Greenstone Conservation Area

Plenty of people wander the Greenstone Track oblivious to Steele Creek Hut, the side track is not highlighted nor is there signage noting the hut. Clearly DOC plan to avoid having the hut burn down, but it’s a surprisingly well marked track once you embark up the hill, recently re-cut, actually a significantly more attractive track than the main Greenstone.

Steele Creek Hut might be renovated but it hasn’t been overdone. The concrete floor still doesn’t extend across the entire horizontal surface where it might be expected, the beech sapling structure has bark attached, the interior lining is still old fertiliser bags. But the exterior has been recently painted. Yes, plenty of character.
